2011 Casting for Recovery Retreat Participants

Thank You for the Partnership with MOGA:

Heartfelt thanks to the MOGA Big Hearts under the Big Sky Program for graciously and generously underwriting the cost of lodging and meals at the Lone Mountain Ranch.  This contribution of $5,000 is greatly appreciated by CFR, the participants, and staff.  Many thanks for your incredible support!  We really appreciate the partnership that was formed between our 2 organizations in 2008 when CFR was invited to make a presentation at the MOGA Convention in Helena.

Your respect for our mission, and open communication have helped us work together over the past years to form a program that meets both our organizations needs, and more importantly, be of service to those whom our organization serves.  This in indeed a unique relationship, and depicts the generosity and caring of the members of MOGA.

We are truly appreciative of their “Big Hearts,” and are proud to be a part of this program which also serves our wounded warriors and children in need.

Report on the 2011 Casting for Recovery

The 2011 Casting for Recovery Retreat held at Lone Mountain Ranch was a huge success!  Fourteen women from throughout Montana were selected at random to attend from those who applied.  Starting with their arrival at the rustic and charming Lone Mountain Ranch, and the warm welcome by the CFR and UCO staffs, they all had an incredible time. On Friday and Saturday they learned the basics of fly fishing, including rod assembly, knot tying, all about what fish eat, and casting.  Interspersed with these classes were sessions addressing the medical and emotional issues of breast cancer. On Sunday morning they were joined by 14 River Helpers, or as we call them, River Angels, who guided the participants in their first fly fishing experience.

PJ Wirchansky, Marketing Manager at LMR and all the staff were just wonderful.  Their professionalism, caring, and availability were above and beyond, and created a great atmosphere.  The meals were delicious, and served in the warm and cozy lodge dining room, where the laughter, camaraderie, and joy were so tangible. The bonding and healing that took place, and friendships that were formed were truly amazing. The atmosphere they set was contagious and set the tone for a great retreat experience for all.

The weather was perfect on Sunday, and fishing on the beautiful Gallatin River was just what the doctor ordered!  Just about everyone caught a fish, and everyone enjoyed the tranquility and pleasure of being on the river.

The experience was certainly a respite from the breast cancer journey that these women are travelling, and has served to enhance their quality of life.  And, many have now gotten “hooked” on the beauty and enjoyment of fly fishing!
